Hinnerk Utermann is a Berlin-based architect, researcher and educator. Through architectural projects, spatial experiments, full-scale construction, and research, his work explores the relationship between architecture, making, and human experience. His background as a trained mason, architect, and artistic researcher informs an approach in which designing, making, and reflecting are closely connected.

He studied architecture at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and Waseda University in Tokyo, as well as fine arts, installation, and space at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig. After graduating with distinction from Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in 2010, he worked as an architect at Bruno Fioretti Marquez Architekten in Berlin. Since 2015, he has worked independently as an architect.

From 2015 to 2025, he taught architecture, urban design, and landscape architecture at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. His teaching focused on architectural design, design fundamentals, model making and prototyping, material practice, and design-build, often combining academic teaching with full-scale construction and collaborative formats.

From 2023 to 2025, he was a research associate in V-Act – Industrie-Kultur-Landschaft Vogtland aktivieren at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, working on transformative research, material cultures, design-build, and knowledge transfer. In 2025, he completed his PhD in Artistic Research at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. His dissertation, 'Architectures of Proximity', takes a practice-based approach to investigate proximity, hospitality, and spatial relationships, using models, prototypes, and full-scale structures as instruments of architectural research.

His work has been presented at international conferences and academic events, most recently at the 20th International Brick Congress in Wismar (2025) and CA²RE (Conferences for Artistic and Architectural Research) Hannover (2026). His publications cover artistic research, architectural education, material practice and design-build. His work encompasses architectural projects, research, exhibitions, lectures, workshops and experimental teaching formats.
