Der Nächste

Der Nächste was developed in August 2022 as an exhibition at Jumbo Receiver, a temporary venue for monthly exhibitions and performances held in an empty apartment in Berlin-Neukölln. The venue focuses on hybrid creative practices. Rather than occupying a single space, the installation extended throughout the apartment. Traces of the building's history, such as former stove locations, chimneys, changes in floor surfaces, doors and windows, became part of this temporary spatial setting. For the exhibition, the apartment was transformed into a series of transitional spaces — 'Divider', 'Waiting Room', 'Outlook', 'One Seat', and the toilet — forming a trajectory towards the central room.

At the centre of the installation were two identical elevated chairs that resembled abstract horses. Positioned slightly off-centre in the elongated room, each structure combined a ladder, a seat, a body and a table. Visitors climbed to a seat height of 1.45 metres and faced one another from opposite sides. This elevated position altered the relationship between the two participants, transforming the domestic room into a setting for encounters.

Der Nächste was built over three weeks in the apartment and at the BBK wood workshop in Berlin. The exhibition took place from 26 to 28 August 2022. During these three days, 52 guests moved individually through the installation and its sequence of spaces.
