Architectures of Proximity

Architectures of Proximity explores how architecture can create conditions for encounters between people. Developed through a building as research approach, the project investigates proximity, hospitality, and shared space by designing and constructing environments that invite encounters.

Inspired by Edward T. Hall's concept of proxemics, architectural traditions such as the Japanese teahouse, and artistic references including Absalon's Cellules, the project proposes a series of small-scale architectures for meetings between two people. The four installations—Space Compartment One, Hochsitz, Talking House, and Der Nächste—serve as experimental settings in which spatial relationships are experienced rather than represented.

Rather than separating design, making, and reflection, the project understands these processes as inseparable. Models, materials, and construction become part of an ongoing dialogue in which architectural ideas are tested, adapted, and transformed. Through autobiographical notes and the continuous process of making, Architectures of Proximity reflects on the relationship between built environments and human relationships, proposing architecture not only as the design of spaces but also as a practice of hosting.
